Asian Canadians: Population Statistics

Asian Canadians are Canadians who can discover their ancestry back to Asia. Most Asian Canadians are in Southwestern British Columbia, Southern Ontario, and other large Canadian cities. Canadians who belong to Asian origin include both the fastest and largest growing group in Canada.

  • Nearly half of the immigrant population in Canada was born in Asia.
  • Asia has been the top continent for immigrants in Canada in recent years. From 2017 to 2019, about 63.5% of immigrants to Canada were born in Asia (including the Middle East).
  • Asian Canadians form a significant minority within the population, and more than 6 million ethnic Asians consider Canada their home.
  • Asian Canadians are visible minorities. East Asian Canadians, South Asian Canadians, West Asian Canadians, and Southeast Asian Canadians are the major ethnic groups.
  • As per Statistics Canada, by 2036, immigrants from Asia could symbolize between 55.7% and 57.9% of all the immigrants.

  • East Asian Canadians have origins, ancestry, and citizenship from East Asia. It is a subgroup of Asian Canadians. As per statistics Canada, East Asian Canadians are visible minorities, and nationality or ethnicity divides them. Some popular ethnic East Asian groups include Hong Kong Canadians, Chinese Canadian, Korean Canadians, Japanese Canadians, and Tibetan Canadians.
  • South Asian Canadians are those Canadians who were either born in South Asia. The largest communities are in British Columbia, Ontario, and Alberta.

  • West Asian Canadians, also known as West Central Asian or Middle Eastern Canadians, have origin from Central or Western Asia.

  • Indo-Canadians are those Canadians who have originated from India. According to Statistics Canada, Indian Canadians are one of the quickest-growing communities in Canada, making it the second-largest non-European group next to Chinese Canadians.

In 2019, 3,41,180 immigrants moved to Canada, mainly from Asia. Ontario has the maximum number of Canadians from South Asia with 44.3% of the population.

In the whole Canadian population, 3 Asian groups were among the top 20 commonly stated origins: Chinese (nearly 1.8 million people), East Indian (about 1.4 million), and Filipino (837, 130).

  • Chinese Canadians belong to Chinese ancestry, either total or partial.
  • Canada recorded nearly 4,01,000 immigrants in 2021, in contrast to the usual annual intake of 3,50,000.
  • Indian immigration to Canada has increased exponentially in the previous years.
  • Around 39,340 Indian immigrants went to Canada in 2016. However, the figures increased to 85,000 in 2019- an increase of 105%.
  • Indians are the fastest-growing community in Canada, crossing 1.6 million in the total population of 37 million.
  • In 2019, about 18.19 thousand Filipino immigrants were living in Canada. Most Filipino citizens live in British Columbia, Ontario, Vancouver, and Calgary.
