Asian Canadians are Canadians who trace their ancestry to Asia or Asian people. Asian Canadians primarily reside in the urban areas of Canada, including Central Alberta, Southern Ontario, Southwestern British Columbia, and other large Canadian cities.
Asian Canadians are classified into:
Immigration to Canada by Southeast Asians is relatively new; most of them arrived in Canada after 1974. Southeast Asia consists of multiethnic countries with standard structures, social practices, and histories. Southeast Asians of Hmong people (An ethnic minority living in the mountains in South China and North Vietnam) also live in Canada.
Chinese Canadians are another largest ethnic group in Canada. Since 1990, Chinese Canadians have settled in areas like Toronto and Vancouver. They have played a significant role in contributing to Canadian society, including literature, sports, film, politics, music, and education.
Chinese culture is an important and thriving part of the overall Canadian culture. Many people visit large Chinatowns in Toronto, Edmonton, and Vancouver to enjoy Chinese New Year festivities.
From 2006 to 2031, the foreign-born population living in Canada could rise four times faster than the rest. By 2031, about half of Canadians aged 15 years and older could be foreign-born or have at least one foreign-born parent. The number has increased by 39% from 2006.
It is expected that diversity will increase among the Canadian-born population in the coming generations despite future immigration, as immigrants’ kids and grandchildren will add to Canada’s diversity.
